In the late Summer of 1854, London was besieged by a deadly cholera outbreak. In the center of it, an inventive doctor tracked its spread by marking the location of each death on his hand-drawn map. Soon, a cluster appeared around the location of a public drinking well. It was promptly shut down, which soon brought an end to the epidemic and the discovery of cholera as a water borne disease. Water treatment and public health were forever revolutionized and the basic principles of spatial analysis were born.
